I don’t want every man in a suit to feel it’s ok to put their hands on my body whenever they feel like it. Most of us were raised in a culture that taught us - you have to permit it, you’re not allowed to complain, you’re “overreacting” if you want your body to be yours alone.
So that’s the context for many of us feeling pain when we see these photos, and not really giving a shit if the women in question “felt it was OK” because that’s part of the problem. And Biden being “unaware” that it was offensive is also part of the problem.
When dealing with professional colleagues, men, if you wouldn’t put your hands on a male colleague in that context, don’t do it with a female colleague. It is that simple. It is infantilizing. Failing to recognize that principle is to relegate women to a lower caste.
And women, if you’re cool, cool with men making intimate gestures toward you in a professional setting, please remember that your personal tolerance level is interpreted as blanket consent for men to impose those violations on the rest of us. Can you do that?
