I don't know what to say without sounding rude, imagine trying to learn about any philosophy without ever engaging its sources and disciples. It's impossible to understand a religious tradition without the context of its own practitioners.
Both believers and nonbelievers can be part of the conversation (if the nonbelievers are well educated on methodology, theology, philosophy and history). To say that we need to *explicitly* exclude practitioners is way beyond ridiculous.
Also please stop assuming that Islam is only Salafism and only Salafism is Islam. There are many different Islams, all agreeing on basic premises and sources but ending up with unique traditions, theologies, and practice.
As a Muslim, I declare my allegiance to all these Islams in the broadest sense, and every Muslim is a brother of mine, even (or especially) when I disagree with them on interpretation. It's disagreements on basic values that I cannot easily stomach.
