Today's Yang-Sanders spat highlights two things.

1.) Relying so heavily on the looming 'threat' of automation as a way to justify UBI is a bad idea.

2.) Sanders's opposition to UBI should surprise nobody, and the signs were there all along.

Sanders is a socialist, even if a "democratic socialist." He honeymooned in the Soviet Union!

In the USSR and other similar socialist states, being (stuck) in an employment relationship was considered both a right and, simultaneously, a sacred duty.

The Sanders statement today was a response to a question about what to do about automation.

"People want to work" is a deceptive statement.

Mostly ppl want to be engaged and feel like they've accomplished something. We don't want to "work" in the sense it's used today, and I feel like even using that terminology is risky concession to protestant work=virtue ethics.
Bc ultimately, comfort is not immoral. A life spent meaningfully is not immoral. A life spent connecting with community and each other is not immoral.

We know this to be true. Bc not only our art but our most powerful obviously aspire to it.
We gaslight ourselves. Deeply. Incessantly.

I've had jobs I enjoyed, but real talk, I don't think I always needed to be in the office 8 hours a day to perform them!

I did something similar to this 5 years ago, in anticipation of EC & @theroots' Wise Up Ghost LP, on tumblr.

(You can still find all those posts if you look, although a lot of the YouTube links etc are now dead ends. It was 40 Days Of EC then, so for 2018 I'm upping it to 45.)
Mostly I will be going chronologically from the early years right up to the present, but it feels right to start out with Costello's 2002 song, "45."
