1. It’s funny. As I go about my day to day life around this country I see a fantastic nation. Yes it has its faults, but it’s full of kind, humerous, hard-working, tolerant people. Genuinely one of the least racist and xenophobic places on the planet.
2. I see our world-class expertise in areas such as finance, law, technology, education, arts and media. I meet truly inspiring entrepreneurial people creating top class companies and businesses. I think of our strong linguistic and cultural ties to many parts of the world.
3. And then I look at our Government, Parliament and their inhabitants. I see, with a few honourable exceptions, a cesspit of ignorance, naked self-interest, and incompetence. A shame on our country. How did the former, our nation, end up with the latter, our governing classes?
4. Was it the toxic legacy of Blair? Who normalised lying & spin and putting his interests before those of the nation? Was it the outsourcing of huge areas of competence to the EU, that allowed the political establishment to disengage from the hard choices and their consequences?
5. Whatever it was, Brexit has clearly shown us that we now have a political class that is way below the standards the U.K. exhibits in most other areas. Wherever we end up we need a massive cleaning of these Augean Stables. I’m just not sure where we’ll find our Hercules.
