Wow, some of the stuff just on the front page is shocking, even given what has come before.
Here’s more from the article - one of the most important points is that the leadership office have regularly said the disciplinary process is independent of them - which is untrue
And more
And more
I have read the full coverage, there is a lot in there. Zooming out, a few observations:
- The emails all appear to be from about a year ago, But it sounds like the Sunday Times had access to a spreadsheet of complaints information which is much more recent, only a few weeks old
- So re obvious confusion and leadership interference going back about a year ago may not still be happening. We just don’t know, but I’m not hopeful given Party statements vs reality
- What is clear is many cases of obvious antisemitism are still festering in process delays
- Some of the cases mentioned where people have been let back in are really astounding and are, for me, the most important parts of these revelations.
- Shows that Labour has actually failed to create a safe environment for Jewish people
- The other important aspect is the too often seen feature of labour’s handling of anti-Semitism, which is that protecting Jewish people is regularly secondary to protecting Corbyn's political allies and interests. That is institutional racism by definition
- Revelations re Barry Gardiner’s decisions raises Qs if it was fair to blame Laura Murray for blocking eg the suspension of Star of David face hugger poster. Sounds like she may have been communicating his decision not making one herself. Fits with what I heard privately
- A final regular feature which I think again shows itself here is when Labour response to the stories it is always 100% defensive, it never admits that any of the revelations are problematic or failings. As usual, it’s all a smear according to the Labour press office
Where does this leave us?
As I have said before, and these leaks demonstrates again and again, Labour has been utterly hopeless in getting a grip on this issue and continues to fight internally over whether it really is an issue or just a smear.
Whilst that is happening, institutional antisemitism (how else to define this?) will persist, which is why it is so important for Equality and Human Rights Commission to intervene and assist Labour and its Jewish members/potential members to become safe again for Jewish people
