It is a given that the monstrosities happening on the border are happening primarily because Trump is a terrible person who is being manipulated by terrible people and spineless eeldicks who are selling out the country. However, I think there's another unexpected factor.
Fox News is used to trying to manipulate the conservative base. That's why it was created, after all. But the model was always to work in tandem with GOP politicians who were also in on the joke: Whip up the base, tell baldfaced lies, and then set policy you can get away with.
But Trump IS their base. He's one of the bozos they got all frothed up in the first place, and the probable cognitive decline and near-certain personality disorders aren't helping. And he doesn't listen to anyone but Fox News and whoever is telling him he's a super genius today.
No advisors with political savvy and an ounce of decency, no intelligence agencies. Trump gets NO input except for his rabid rally crowds, his Dumb Veruca Salt offspring, Jared, Stephen Miller, and hours at a time of Fox News.
So instead of trusting Fox to go out and lie for him like a normal Republican President, Trump is the one getting whipped into bigger and bigger frenzies BY Fox News.
And, aside from the fact that he is a made sociopath who has never experienced a consequence or a moment of empathy for anyone else, I think that's one reason why he's become such a slavering ghoul about the border. He's in an infinite feedback loop with Fox.
Fox CAN'T say that things at the border are all better thanks to Trump's brave actions because their whole business model is frightening white people about brown people. Which means Trump can't get his fake rah-rah hero parade and feel like he did a big, manly thing.
So Trump gets more and more frightened because of what he sees on Fox and more and more brutal because of what he sees on Fox. And the only other people around are Stephen Miller and spoiled, sheltered brats who couldn't pass a civics test if you spotted them the answer key.
Which would be funny if people hadn't already died because of it. If children hadn't already been kept in cages and taken away from their parents with no records of where.
And as the monsters with a few rudimentary shreds of compassion get defensive and try to convince themselves that they aren't really monsters for what they've done and allowed to happen, it's only going to get worse.
