Q. Isn’t it legit to ask a salesperson for their W-2, to prove they earned what they said they did last year?

A. No. A sales manager is just as responsible as any other manager for being able to gauge talent without invading a candidate’s privacy.
If you listen to me break down my accounts and what each of them bought last year and don’t believe what I’m telling you, then hire someone else. As in any function, the best (and thus most marketable) candidates won’t tolerate being treated like cattle. Why should they?
The double standard (candidates must verify past compensation but companies won’t verify anything) is beyond insulting.

Will your company share its commission reports from last year?

No?

You won’t divulge that, because it’s confidential?

HYPOCRITE!
