Looking at twitter, it's been a while but I feel like I should come back to this.
Things I'm thinking about now:
@AndrewYang #Yang2020 's Freedom Dividend.
As an engineer in robotics I am constantly asked by people I meet about two things: Are robots going to kill us all? (No)
And is automation coming for our jobs? (unfortunately, yes)
Huge industries (trucking, retail, call center, ride share, etc.) are about to be and are being disrupted by automation in a way similar to what happened to manufacturing jobs over the past few decades. It's big.
I, as an engineer, have wondered if there is an impetus on me (or my field) to do something or to help the people we are displacing. A duty to sound the sirens and tell people what's coming. I think the answer is yes, but I don't know how.
This is not a matter of if, just when.
Generally, our government and the world is reactive and not proactive to these issues. A report comes out about what's coming and it gets a few cycles before the President or a celebrity over takes it. It's not at the forefront of the conversation.
This is a problem we should solve BEFORE it happens, have plans and back up plans. Throw the relevant experts at the problem and work out the details. We need creativity, empathy, and intelligence to get ahead of it so we don't have to fix it.
As fewer people are needed to do these jobs, we will see more wealth concentrate with those who own the automation, increasing the wealth inequality that is so obvious and rampant today. We will see people lose their livelihoods and with it, for some, their purpose.
This is a stream of consciousness so I apologize for the barely legible rant. I started this as a quick shout out to @AndrewYang and it got away from me. In short, I'm worried.
So... check out what @AndrewYang #Yang2020 has to say. His logic and careful thinking resonates with me. Many of his policies are laid out on his website. I think he can do great things if we let him. At the very least, his rhetoric will guide us to many conversations we need.
