True confession, I used the CRAAP test for years before realizing that it was steering students wrong by seeing the results in their writing. I didn't have a good, simple substitute. Thanks to @holden's work, I do now. webliteracy.pressbooks.com

I can report that @magiciansbook is right about the deep and abiding pleasures of Susan Choi's "Trust Exercise." What a book. slate.com/culture/2019/0…
Even though I'd read and really liked Choi's "My Education" I'm not sure I would've persisted with Trust Exercise without @magiciansbook skillful "spoiling." In fact, the review spoils nothing. It's useful context to for the opening half (or so) of the novel.
As is, the review helped me appreciate how brilliant Trust Exercise is. Like in My Education, Choi takes something we think we know and teases it apart before putting it back together with some of the original bits missing in a way that gives us a fresh look at the old thing.

This news gives me hope. Assessment is important; I assess my courses and students constantly, but the assessment regimes imposed on faculty aren't helpful. We can do better. insidehighered.com/news/2019/04/1…
For writing, I'm a fan of looking at student artifacts collected organically and judged holistically, but I also think we can ask students about how they view their learning. @meaningfulWP is a good model for this. Do students think they've built their knowledge and skills?
Students can answer that question. They know when they're learning v. when they're performing learning simulations for a grade or to please a narrow rubric. If you ask them what they've learned, they can tell you.

Attention is not and never has been a proxy for learning and yet because it's the thing we can kind of, sort of, a little bit measure, some are willing to overlook this fact.
Why can't we let learning be as complicated we know it to be and do our best to respect how complicated it is and honor the individual needs of our students? They are human beings, acting in human ways. insidehighered.com/blogs/just-vis…
The iconic pose of a figure deep in thought (Rodin's "The Thinker), is not allowed in no excuses charter schools and would be scored as problematic behavior by the attention-scoring facial recognition algorithms. Why are we allowing this torture to be done to students?

The CRAAP test is a list of general questions used to help you evaluate a source-like the @NYT op-ed. Let’s see how the essay fares against the Rubric:
1. Currency: When was the information published or posted? Answer: Simultaneously with a USC student paper that matches 100% with no citations listed. Fail.
2. Relevance: Have you looked at a variety of sources before determining the efficacy of this one? Answer: No. Fail.

I recently talked with graduate students in a seminar on #teaching practices in #HigherEducation about how to design and teach a course when you are not an expert on all of the content--which is really what most teaching is. Here are the main takeaways for those interested. 1/
In my experience, there are four main mistakes that novices often make when designing and teaching a course for the first time.

First, they approach the task by venturing off on their own into the wilderness of literature on all of the topics they don't know well. 2/
In other words, they prepare for course design as if it is a qualifying exam, attempting to become experts on all of the topics that the course will/should/must cover. 3/
