The audience at last night’s panel I moderated on Power of Prosecutors wrote & submitted really important questions. Couldn’t get to them all. So I want to share & throw these out to anyone who feels compelled to answer on here. Whether or not you have “expertise.” Read on below.
“What do you think about the choice to become a prosecutor for law students who want to fight against mass incarceration? Don’t they have to spend many years putting people in prison before they get to a position where they can influence policy? What can we do about that?”
“Why are prosecutors so often NOT represented in progressive spaces? Do progressive advocates paint “prosecutors” w/ too broad a brush? Why? Doesn’t this ignore a lot of the good & varied work done by prosecutors?”
“Any thoughts on the Queens DA race? Especially since nearly all the candidates self-identify as “progressive prosecutors?” Do any of them deserve this mantel?”
“Is there any oversight happening with prosecutors (I.e. holding them accountable)?”
“1. How can state bars become more motivated to try prosecutors for misconduct? What is their role in all of this? Misconduct trials are almost unheard of, and at most result in suspension. 2. Where do things stand w/ grand jury reform?”
“When looking from the abolition perspective, isn’t *all* prosecution regressive? How can we keep an abolition framework in mind when looking to elect progressive prosecutors?”
“Can you speak about restorative/transformative justice as an alternative redress to harm (as opposed to prosecution)? How do you see “survivors’” role in determining how harm is addressed?”
“What about prosecuting crimes of power (bosses, corporations) for crimes like wage theft, or job site deaths? Can this address the underlying issue of poverty? Do you think criminal prosecution is as, more, or less useful than civil suits against the same bad actors?”
“Thinking about decriminalizing sex work, there is a bill being shopped around that would decriminalize sex workers AND their johns. Where do [should] we draw the line on decriminalization?”
