1. The missing facts from #ClimateChangeTheFacts. The climate crisis is a direct result of neoliberal capitalism. Corporations were given the power to exploit people and the planet for profit . An ideology of free market fundamentalism - money was the only thing that mattered.
2. Neoliberalism drove de-regulation, allowed corporations free reign, whilst at the same time rich countries forced poor countries to open up their economies & allow the exploitation of their resources, & forced structural adjustment programmes that hollowed out public services
3. The most powerful & profitable corporations - fossil fuel companies, industrial food companies, & the banks financing them calculated that sacrificing black & brown people in the global South was just part of doing business.
4. The wealth of the UK & rich countries - from slavery, colonialism, & neoliberalism was based on exploitation of the global South, & sacrificing black/brown people. Capitalism like climate change was racialised & drove inequality.
5. 3.5 billion people surviving on $5 a day, a billion going hungry, close to 2 billion without access to energy. The very same people who were being sacrificed to the climate crisis. Killer floods, droughts & famines all acceptable as long as the $$ flowed to the City of London.
6. 1/3 of the value of the FTSE 100 is from the extractive industry, hundreds of millions invested in mining. Of the 100 companies responsible for 70% of emissions many are based in the UK because they can count on UK support to protect their business
7. The big green NGOs knew the truth that stopping the climate crisis meant taking on the economic model. But the one word banned in all NGOs - the C word. CAPITALISM. Why? Because it was preferable to let people die in the global South than rick their privileged access to govt
8. Big NGOs, Govt & business colluded in pretending it was ‘possible to live within the system’... because they knew they weren’t ‘dying from the system’ They were the richest 10% of the world responsible for 50% of global emissions
9. The Paris Agreement that the big NGOs colluded with rich countries to deliver - stripped away legally binding targets, legal responsibility for doing their fair share of effort, of providing the ££ to support the most impacted deal with the climate crisis & poverty
10. The Paris agreements current pledges lead to at least 3.4c warming and upto 7c warming. There is no 12 years to stop the climate crisis. a million people are dying already, millions more losing their homes & livelihoods but hey those are black/brown people so they don’t count
11. The panic in the global North about climate change following the IPCC report about 1.5c shouldn’t mean empty calls for climate action. White folks did that a decade ago with the Tck Tck Tck campaign - and then told people to change their lightbulb or don’t use plastic bags
12. If you are genuinely serious about tackling climate change then start with the truth. Tackling climate change is not possible without structural changes to the economy.
Make concrete demands don’t simply call for a climate action
12. The UK’s fair share of effort is -247% - so your demands better include zero carbon by 2030 plus ££ in climate debt to the poorest countries. Saying net zero simply allows business as usual whilst hoping for a technological miracle whilst still sacrificing black/brown people
13. We need a Global Green Deal.
Energy must be a public good. No private control of extraction, production. Massive reduction in energy use - so productive energy only. And decentralised RE energy systems to tackle energy poverty
End industrial food production - 70% of all food is produced by small farmers on 25% of land, the rest is for big business profit. We can feed the planet & cool the planet.
End deforestation by Land rights for indigenous communities & forest dependant communities.
A global living wage for all - and public services such as education, health & housing to be a human right so everyone has the right to a dignified life
have a positive vision for the world. Otherwise the answer to the climate crisis will be eco-fascism & walls & fences. That means standing up for migrant rights, the right to move & right not to move. It means recognising that climate is deeply racialised & gendered
If you pretend that can all be done under capitalism, then you are lying to yourself & to others. Simply shouting system change not climate change are hollow words, unless you see this as a political struggle, with the need to build power. A life & death one.
But a life & death one for the global South. So stop with the ‘I’m doing this for my kids shit’.. the dead are already here.. its just that brown/black skin doesn’t register or count. If you think that’s harsh - ask yourself why the new telegenic heroes of climate are white
