a question we get frequently: what’s the name of your organization?
we have and have had many names: CML, CEDAR, MAPLE (The Monastic Academy), and OAK. each of these names is still around and there will probably be more in the future.

legally, as a national org, we are a non-profit 501(c)3: the Center for Mindful Learning (CML). originally we focused on mindfulness for youth, especially in schools, hence the name. as the monastery has taken off we’ve focused less on that but it remains a passion of ours
our first monastery was founded in Vermont. its name is MAPLE: the Monastic Academy for the Preservation of Life on Earth. 🍁
our second monastery is in the Bay Area in California, currently in South San Francisco, but will almost certainly move once or twice before it finds a permanent home. this is OAK: Optimization of Awakening and Kindness. 🌳
we're planning to double how many locations we have every five years, and the plan is for each new monastery to have a tree name. we want to have "a forest of monasteries collaborating and competing to train the next generation of contemplative leaders”

the name for the overall community, this forest, is CEDAR: the Community for the Experience and Development of Awakening and Responsibility
many people have told us to just settle on one name. i can sympathize but think that this is a problem that, at our stage of growth - with two locations - is very confusing, but i think will get less so as we have more locations, esp. at around 5-6+ monasteries.
