Thread: European Parliament elections in Scotland. Here are the SNP candidates. They will be ranked by party members soon. In 2014 SNP won two out of six seats, and were best placed to flip the sixth seat, won by UKIP. Alyn Smith is incumbent; Ian Hudghton isn't running again.
Here are the Labour candidates in Scotland. In 2014 they won two out of six seats. They are second best placed to flip the sixth seat from UKIP. Martin is the incumbent. The other incumbent, Catherine Stihler, resigned a couple of months ago.

CORRECTION: Tories are *fourth* best placed to flip the sixth seat from UKIP. (Greens are third best placed).
The top two UKIP candidates for Scotland. David Coburn, elected for UKIP in 2014, moved to the Brexit party. That party has not released full candidate details. I don't know if he is running again.
The Green party was not far behind winning a seat in Scotland in 2014 (32k votes short). They are third best placed to flip the sixth seat from UKIP. No candidates announced yet AFAIK.

They didn't win a seat in 2014. 13k votes behind the Green party. They won a seat in Scotland in the previous three EP elections.
Change UK candidates will reportedly be announced on Tuesday 23rd April. Hard to assess its chances of winning a seat. Running level with or behind LibDems and Greens in national polling. Some will look at national vote shares of "Remain" parties; some will look at seat numbers.
Recap: the best placed to flip the sixth seat from UKIP are, in order: SNP, Green, LibDems, Tories, Labour. (Sorry, another correction)

Sufficient increase in any TWO of SNP, Green and LibDems vote would flip the sixth seat from UKIP *and* the fifth seat, held by Labour. //

European Arrest Warrant law will now probably apply to the UK until October 31st, due to the extension of EU membership. (Even without that, ordinary extradition law would apply). EAW law leaves it to UK authorities to assess whether to prioritise EAW or US extradition request.
Reminder that Mr Assange challenged the previous Swedish EAW up to the UK Supreme Court: supremecourt.uk/cases/uksc-201…
At the time, UK courts could not ask the CJEU questions about EAW cases. Now they can. Mr Assange might challenge a new EAW, leading to a fast track CJEU judgment.
The EU & USA have an extradition treaty (building on national treaties with the US), which the CJEU also has jurisdiction to interpret. While the UK has opted out of that treaty, Sweden has not, in the event that proceedings relating to Assange are brought in the Swedish courts.

Green party says it's psyched for EP elections, but no further details on the website AFAICS
Nothing about European Parliament candidates from the Liberal Democrats or TIG yet AFAICS, including on their websites, although the latter has applied for recognition as a political party in order to run candidates.

Journalists are all in on covering the upcoming European Parliament elections. But most power still resides in nation states and the EP is not the most powerful institution within the EU.

So national elections remain more important. Poland's in the fall are crucial, for example.

The spotlight here has been on the far-right populist "True Fins" party. Late opinion polls suggested that it may come second.

According to early returns, it could only come third or forth. (Look for PS in the attached chart.)

UKIP's rise in the last European Elections was meteoric! They only didn't stand in seats they didn't poll well in the election before.
This is despite the fact that the EU average turnout was lowering across member states and the UK traditionally being lower than the EU average

1. As media had previously reported #Juncker decided not to focus on what his Commission achieved but on what still needs to be done to convince European citizens to say 'Yes' to the EU when they go to the polls next year.
2. I agree that it is not a good moment for pats on the back and I agree with #Juncker that member-states have in many respects held the Commission up from delivering on Commission's promises.
