This column by @ChaseMSpears about the relationship between DoD and the press is very bad. It's basically common Trumpism designed to look like thoughtful reasoning. I say this as both a former Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at HUD and Army officer.
There *are* instances, in my view, where a public affairs shop can be justified in freezing out a specific reporter. We dealt with hostile, bad-faith reporters at both VA and HUD when I was with those agencies.

No single reporter is entitled to information from a federal agency.
But otherwise, this is not complicated. Taxpayers are entitled to timely, accurate information from federal agencies. Period. There's no need to discuss this. The idea that DoD is justified in not doing that is preposterous.
