48% of Americans commit suicide with a gun. Among veterans who commit suicide, nearly *70%* are completed with a firearm.

When the topic comes up at a hearing, Republican @RepBost reflexively defends the 2nd Amendment. Because Republicans care more about guns than veterans.
The remarks by @RepBost came right after @RepKathleenRice laid out why talking about guns -- not taking them, TALKING about them -- was important.

We're dealing with a gun cult.
Here's the video. It's worse than I described.

"Losing one veteran to suicide is tragic and none of us take it lightly. THAT BEING SAID, the veteran's 2nd AMENDMENT RIGHT . . . ."

Rotating habitats are cool, but has he thought about spending it on, say, cancer research or endowments for universities that serve underprivileged students or a malaria vaccine

She also spent a lot of time explaining why the best strategy is to do nothing about it.
Pelosi is saying A) the President may not leave office peacefully if he loses.

But she also assumes B) it will be a free and fair election.

If you believe A, then you should not assume B.
Pelosi is quite literally abdicating her responsibility to conduct proper oversight of the presidency. That's the job of Congress. She's Speaker of the House.

The #MAGA crowd got @mistermegative suspended for calling Robert E. Lee (who died 149 years ago) a traitor.

This is ridiculous @Twitter, so you should fix it. @TwitterSupport @jack
Now @Twitter has rejected @mistermegative's appeal and threatened to permanently suspend his account -- for insulting Robert E. Lee.

While @mistermegative remains in Twitter jail, @jack allows Donald Trump's truly destructive account to remain. Absurd. @TwitterSupport
Here's another example of trolls mass reporting something innocuous and Twitter suspending the account. Pretty ugly.

You have within you a shelf, a long shelf, of tightly wound spools that are more or less the .zip files of your opinion on a host of topics. When the topic comes up, you don't need to think, you just unspool the spool and you're covered.

Not a criticism. Just a brain thing.
This is not a bad thing. It's how your brain deal with a lot of things because paying all the attention to all the things all the time is not a functional strategy. Our brain creates shortcuts to deal with stuff so we don't need to think through every step when walking
Just as helpful when it comes time to have an opinion. You could think everything through every time, and spend your time paralyzed, or you could just unspool a spool and get on with the conversation.

Authors don't dislike being tagged in negative reviews because we can't take criticism. We dislike it because you're coming into our virtual living rooms to call us assholes when the social contract says we can't reply.
"Don't argue with reviewers" is an authorial commandment, and the reason I avoid, say, Goodreads, where people will two-star a book because I got my cats from a breeder instead of a shelter.
If I swing by Goodreads and tell everyone who's ever posted a negative review that they're ugly and stupid and smell like farts, guess what? I'M AN ASSHOLE!

Have been following this case for sometime now, and while this one in particular has a slew of problems (hope the babies and mother are doing alright), gene editing poses a host of ethical quandaries I grappled with in my undergrad and still do.

In terms of where we are now, there's a general understanding that clinical use of gene therapy in somatic cells is acceptable, but we should stray far from germline editing, in part due to little understanding of CRISPR/Cas9 or other technologies' long term consequences.
Clinical trials of gene therapies for adults and children with ADA-SCID, Parkinson's, etc. have flourished in the last few decades, but in the US the NIH has banned from funding research that involves CRISPR/Cas9 in human embryos.

Let's start with Nixon's approval by party over his entire term. Nixon was fairly popular through the first term, almost always over 50% approval, though hovering at or just below 50 for most of 1971. (Black line is overall approval) /2
To modern eyes the most striking fact is approval among Democrats is pretty strong: high 40s in 1969, around 40 in 1970, mid-30s in 1971, rising back to the 40s in 1972. Compare opposition party approval since 2005 has been about 10% /3
