Unnerved by the Mueller report pg 50 reminding us how vulnerable the voting systems are? Why aren't we citizens acting to ensure the security of our elections? This is ONE area that we can control. Reminder from March 2018. See thread. usatoday.com/story/opinion/…
/ It's easy to assume that the state, or Congress will take care of ensuring OUR elections. We forget the tension that exists between those elected under an unreliable system and their desire to change the system. "The system elected me. Proves it's a good system."
/ Using GA as example--where we KNOW that there were massive voting system problems, --all predictable--and unauditable results,--while hand. marked paper ballots COULD have been used to avoid it---did voters get engaged enough to try to secure their elections? No. But why?
/ Every GA county has paper ballot scanner/tabulators that work well. If they don't have enough, there is a used market where they are sold for a few $$ each.
/ Every county has 2 boards, each with the authority to use paper ballots. The Bd of Commissioners and the Board of Elections. The decision is made LOCALLY. NOT A SINGLE COUNTY chose to conduct a secure election although they were warned by world's best experts to use paper.
/ Every county elex. board has authority to initiate recounting and review to be certain that tabulations are right. They have the money, the equipment, the authority, the right to audit the count---but NOT ONE WOULD DO SO.
But how many of the 159 counties were relentlessly lobbied by their local voters to go to a paper ballot system? What would have happened if dozens of citizens showed up for every meeting bringing the local press making demands for secure elections? I say they'd listen.
/. I think that a question facing us in 2020 is whether voters care enough to demand secure elections, or if they want someone else to fix it. After all, they are OUR elections---NOT the government's elections. It is really OUR responsibility to fix.
