He is a journalist. He is also a spy. A rapist. And a defamer. They are not either-or choices. Stop this sophomoric slide into binary options that do not reflect reality or law. Assange is a journalist, who belongs on trial for acts other than journalism. Period.
Don’t mistake me for an Assange supporter. I’d as soon spit on him as look at him. But website publishing is journalism, and you would not want it otherwise. Yet, hacking, stealing, espionage, defaming with actual malice - those are all crimes/torts regardless of his status.
Oh yeah, forgot raping. A journalist who raped does not need to be deemed not-a-journalist before he can be charged with rape. Same for Assange’s espionage, hacking, etc.
