Security trainers have told us that "the cloud" is a concept people don't always understand. Here's a simple explanation:
When you upload something to “the cloud,” that just means it’s on someone else’s computer. Our Security Education Companion explains: sec.eff.org/articles/the-c… A drawing of a computer connected to a cartoon cloud with a thick black line, simulating a direct internet connection. The cloud has an expression of uncertainty.
Rather than connecting straight to some sort of special digital filing cabinet in the sky, cloud storage is actually a network of computers, usually in the form of servers that store your data and allow you to access it as digital files from outside locations. Those drawings are connected to each other via a thick black line, and then that line is connected to a drawing of several servers.
All sorts of devices connect to "the cloud," including Internet of things (IOT) devices, such as Internet-enabled speakers, TV's, and thermostats that can be controlled through an Internet connection.
