If you're a committed fan of #heavymetal, after a certain age you'll begin to ask yourself what exactly metal is and why you love this kind of music.
For me, metal is defined by raw aggression and an uncompromising attitude. That may sound like punk, but unlike punk, metal puts a great emphasis on technical excellence, which reflects this genre's working-class roots, for a craftsman necessarily takes pride in his skills.
Of course, metal is no longer music for the working class. It has long gone global and transcended class boundaries. As far as I know, even the most dangerous second-wave black metal musicians all come from middle-class backgrounds.
Metal is also about turning the dark impulses in all of us into an art form. As we cannot act out those dark impulses IRL, it has become an effective outlet for them. Thus metal is both *positive* and *empowering* -- and that's why I mostly probably will never "outgrow" it.
