THE FUTURE WORKFORCE AND THE FUTURE WORKPLACE
As a Human Resource Professional, I have taken time to review the trends in the workplace and the emerging workforce for that workplace. I can confidently say that all that we see today will soon be significantly altered. #MyHRMuse
The future workforce will be a fusion of people and technology. There will be greater collaborations between machines and man because of the need to lean on machines for speed and accuracy while leaning on man for direction and emotional intelligence. #MyHRMuse
Our society is now faced with:
1. Fatigued Courage: People are checking out of systems that silence their voices.
2. Rapid Change: The speed of innovation has become phenomenal to keep up with.
3. Intense Competition: Markets are not expanding at the rate of entrants
#MyHRMuse
4. Increased Consciousness: People have woken up to their rights, powers and obligations.
5. Staggering Complexity: What used to be simple to accomplish has many unrevealed connections and considerations.
6. Unfathomable Collaboration: Odd business networks are rising. #MyHRMuse
7. Slackening Culture: The difference between values and vices have become so thin. Actions are faintly weighed by its impact on the dignity of our humanity.

These trends are calling for a new breed of people in our workplaces. #MyHRMuse
PREPARING THE FUTURE WORKFORCE
Employers have a responsibility to get involved in raising the new workforce. It is no longer enough to leave it all to academia. The academics need to be supported to be conscious of and familiar with prevailing practices in industry. #MyHRMuse
Employers can explore internship programmes for undergrads to get them familiar with the workplace before they fully join. It reduces cost of integration and allows for a seamless transition to work. They are the future workforce. #MyHRMuse
Corporate organizations seeking to improve the quality of their future workforce should work out modalities where faculty members embark on industry Internships. This will improve the offerings of these scholars in the classrooms. #MyHRMuse
In preparing the future workforce, employers should seek to bridge the gap between students that have demonstrated an aptitude for learning but are handicapped because of resources. Merit based scholarships filtered with a needs assessment of applicants is vital. #MyHRMuse
Scholars have been stagnant in their desire to dig deeper in their research work in a bid to expand the frontiers of knowledge. Employers of the future workforce should seek avenues to either integrate scholars into their R&D space or budget for research grants. #MyHRMuse
In getting the future workforce set for the future workplace, employers should become very deliberate and intentional in equipping them through special programmes and events. A match of staff mentors and current students will do well to prepare the talent pipeline. #MyHRMuse
Employers should be swift to honour requests for academic visits by students, invitations to speak on their campuses and much more. It is important to be visible to the students before they meet coworkers in the workplace. #MyHRMuse
Employers can influence the quality of the future workforce if they participate in academic curriculum reviews. The rapid change in this knowledge economy makes information very vital to having a winning edge. Accreditation of programmes should be industry-focused. #MyHRMuse
Ideas coming out of institutions need incubation. Organizations with a framework for nurturing ideas can enter in partnerships with researchers and creative students to set up spinoffs. Renown academics have been instrumental to industry development using this approach. #MyHRMuse
THE FUTURE WORKPLACE
The future workplace is going to defy brick and mortar because of the need for increased mobility. Occupational migration in industries will be on the increase as people move from areas of surplus skill supplies to the zones where they are deficit. #MyHRMuse
The workplace of the future must recognise that the future workforce will continue to have multiple roles and obligations to contend with. This will lead to rise of diverse work-life integration policies and programmes to support the non-work domains of the workforce. #MyHRMuse
Workplace hospitality will take the centre stage. The future workforce will demand to be treated beyond mere rhetorics as most critical assets of the organization. Workplaces will cater for leisure and fun activities of the workforce. #MyHRMuse
Workplace design will be altered. Employers will begin to create and construct workspaces that empower creativity. A lot of psychology will come into workplace design thinking. Employee productivity will place a responsibility on the employer to reconfigure work spaces. #MyHRMuse
The workplace of the future will be multi-skilled focused in delivering on projects and solutions. There will be increased co-working and team building across diverse seemingly unrelated skillsets. #MyHRMuse
Due to the rapid rate of creation of knowledge, learning and development will be highly prioritised. Employers will not take the risk to leave employees to self-development as competition would become intense on a lean market. #MyHRMuse
With the rise of the #MeToo movement and the increased consciousness of rights and roles in the human society, the future workplace will be big on the practice of diversity and inclusion. Policies aiding workplace diversity will influence corporate reputation. #MyHRMuse
Globalisation's effect on the new workplace will increase the number of people working remotely. The future workplace will be filled with a workforce that is far removed in space and possibly local time from where his services are required yet work will be delivered. #MyHRMuse
The future workplace will place a huge demand on the future workforce for engagement. Due to the intersections of work patterns, employers will want to be assured of commitment and active involvement. #MyHRMuse
The future workplace leaning on technology will take people decisions based on analytics. The future workplace is a digitally wired one and efforts will be quantitatively captured and recalled for periodic assessments to determine workplace alignment. #MyHRMuse
In preparing the future workforce for the future workplace, attention must be paid to talent management principles of attracting, retaining, motivating, developing and deploying people to achieve corporate goals.
