#IHadAnAbortion twice. Abortion is a right. It is an economic issue. It is my story and the story of many others. It is ours to share it not. I no longer bear the burden of silence, and stand up to stereotypes and anti-choice distortions of who we are and why we choose.
In my last year of grad school I was pregnant, my son was barely one my daughter approaching four. Their dad and I were separating and it was already a struggle financially, emotionally, mentally etc between two young children, work and school.
#IHadAnAbortion thinking about my life and circumstances and the life I wanted for my children. Finishing school and getting a full time job was in my reach. Having another baby in the midst of a failed relationship and living as a single mother caused a lot of stress and anxiety
If I were a young mother living in Ohio today with the recent passage of a total abortion ban, I wouldn’t have been able to make the best choices for me and my children.
#IHadAnAbortion a second time a few years later. My ex and I had a relapse over Christmas. I got stuck on the highway traveling back home in a snow storm and forgot to get a morning after pill when I finally made it home.
My kids were then 7 and 5, I was a new attorney without paid maternity leave and made too much for daycare assistance. I chose my job and my two children and the future of our little trio.
I have spoken honestly with my younger siblings and children about my experience hoping the make the best possible choices for them. The keyword is choice and factions in this country are working hard to remove those choices from us.
I used to be ashamed. 5 years ago I wouldn’t have admitted publicly that #IHadAnAbortion because of the stigma attached. But watching others speak out, I have learned that the stigma is not real and another way women are silenced and oppressed. This is my story.
