Headline grabber in Spanish elections is nationalist #VOX . First time in Spain that a far right party is predicted to win seats in Parliament since death of military dictator Franco /1
VOX spokesman tells me they have nothing to do with Franco, theywant to restore pride in Spain and that their recent rise to popularity is born out of how Spain’s traditional politicians handled the Catalan independence bid /2
VOX is Spain-centric populist nationalist: pro EU, pro bullfighting, anti Catalan independence but like LePen, Salvini it’s critical of mass migration +presence of Islam. Unlike other European populists VOX fails to really attract disaffected workers traditionally voting left /3

So.. back to the backstop: Clearly the official EU line is “We’re not budging. The #Brexit Withdrawal Agreement was signed off by Theresa May and cabinet. End of story.” And there is 100% EU sincerity they would love not to have to discuss the thorny issue ever again. But.. /1
Realpolitik means EU leaders know a new UK PM will mean new #Brexit arguments - and crucially - since the EU hopes fervently to avoid no deal - it means new mathematics in Parliament. EU will watch closely to see if new PM could carry a majority for a #Brexit deal /2
To be clear: I am NOT saying here that EU will abandon the backstop if faced with strong new UK PM. EU wants to protect its single market, protect GFA and protect member state Ireland over departing member UK BUT /3

To clarify re backstop +Withdrawal Agreement: I did not:
1. say there is right now a change of attitude amongst the 27 EU leaders
2. say the EU is about to drop its metaphorical pants and is poised to renegotiate with next UK PM
Why am I not saying this? Because it’s not true /1
What I am saying is: 1. EU leaders happy not to think much about #Brexit right now. End of extension -31 Oct- comfortably far away. They face more pressing issues.
2. I expect EU -incl Macron- to engage more in autumn + be more open then to further extension - if UK PM asks /2
NB I’m talking openness to new extension NOT to renegotiating backstop. What I did point out is EARLIER in negotiations I’m told there was more openness (not implying majority) to backstop end-date (though no one in EU likes idea) BUT member Ireland came first +that was that /3

Re #Brexit renegotiation: It’s true the text Theresa May signed up to when EU agreed to a Brexit extension clearly states this extra time can’t be used to renegotiate the (legally-binding) Withdrawal Agreement though the (aspirational) Political Declaration can change HOWEVER /

I think EU leaders will engage with more than a ‘Forget it’ come the autumn. They will at least listen to what the new UK prime minister has to say /2
Remember, the Brexit extension runs out end of October and EU leaders want to avoid a no deal #Brexit which would be costly for them too BUT as before, they won’t avoid No Deal at any price /3

From Franco's death until 1982, Spanish conservatism was represented by the Unión de Centro Democrático (UCD), an offshoot of modern Francoism, which managed to steer Spain firmly in a democratic direction.
Part of the UCD's success during re-democratization was the fact that Spanish political conservatism did not risk being outflanked on the right by electorally significant anti-system parties like the Italian MSI or the Greek Ethniki Parataxis.

So we've got a general election in #Spain today. Socialist PM Pedro Sánchez is the frontrunner, although it's not certain that he will be able to put up a ruling majority. Here's a thread with a few thoughts on #28A:

What's new?

a) The Socialists are set to win, a first since 2008
b) Five national parties will get over 10% of the vote
c) The far-right will enter parliament, a first since 1982
d) The conservative PP faces an assault on the right not seen since the UCD collapsed in the 80s

2/
The campaign has been heavily polarized between left and right.

The right (PP + Ciudadanos + Vox) has focused on #Catalonia, hammering Sánchez's credibility and accusing him of being ready to cut the country into pieces for the sake of remaining in office.

3 members of the Feminist group Femen who ran into the gathering. The women were topless and had the words "Legal fascism,national shame" painted on their torsos.
Police escorted the three activists away while Franco supporters shouted insults and "Franco! Franco! Franco!" #Spain
The rally is held annually on the Sunday falling closest to Nov. 20, the date Franco died in 1975. The general ruled Spain for 36 years after leading a military uprising that started the Spanish Civil War. #Spain

The only thing that stopped #Portland from being next #Charlottesville was several centimetres of helmet. Police sent two people to the hospital for head injuries in attacks justified by claims of non-existent "thrown projectiles" in order to protect the heavily armed far-Right.
This was carried by police who for months have used the same tactic - shoot one side to allow the other to escape. In this case, Proud Boys, who for months have attacked citizens walking on the street, were allowed to march and attack more people.
The Portland police are also on record saying that Patriot Prayer is "more mainstream" (guess Kek flags, people who attended Unite the Right, and shirts celebrating mass murderers are mainstream now) despite the ongoing links between far-Right violence and out right killers.
