i had some time to kill this morning between a court hearing and a meeting downtown & i’m mad all over again about the years-old fight about benches on charlottesville’s downtown mall.
there are HUNDREDS of empty seats on the downtown mall... but they are all available only to patrons of restaurants. there are maybe a dozen places to sit down for free. and they’re, by design, away from businesses and very uncomfortable.
joan fenton of the downtown business association likes to talk about unhoused people having knife fights as a consequence of adequate seating on the downtown mall. i just want somewhere to drink my coffee for twenty minutes before my next meeting.
when i’m downtown all day for meetings and trials, i usually go back to my car to sit when i have time to kill. when it’s very nice out, or when my car is too far away to get back to, i have on several occasions eaten my lunch sitting down on the sidewalk. bring back the benches.
