Analysis from @ciel_tweets & @boell_stiftung: "#IPCC Unsummarized: Unmasking Clear Warnings on Overshoot, Techno-fixes, and the Urgency of Climate Justice" ➡️…

Key takeaways in this thread 🧵👇
Early this month, the @IPCC_CH published the Contributions of Working Group III to the Sixth Assessment Report.

The subject? Mitigation of #ClimateChange.

#IPCC #ClimateReport #ActOnClimate
Like previous #IPCC Reports, this one demonstrates:
🚩#ClimateChange is a present emergency
🚩Each increment of warming accelerates the scale & severity of the crisis
🚩Phasing out ALL #FossilFuels is the quickest & most effective way to end #ClimateChaos.…

@jkenney So you expect big govt to pay for questionable emission reduction tech for a profit driven, private industry that’s responsible for most of the emissions🤔How does that make sense? The govt should be investing in renewable tech that doesn’t produce emissions in the first place!
@jkenney Time to scale up that carbon tax for big emitters if this is your solution.
Unfortunately your carbon capture & SNR fantasies are a deflection from real climate solutions & renewable alternatives that are feasible and cost effective. Perpetuating reliance on FF is not a solution
@jkenney #CarbonCapture is a delay tactic that is not conducive to addressing the urgency of ending our reliance on fossil fuels. Does the business model even make sense? Ask Sask Power

The global carbon market is booming, it’s expected to reach $22 trillion by 2050.

So where did it all start?

A thread 🧵 of how a Mormon missionary and a future Reiki Master started it all in the 80’s

In 1987, Applied Energy Services (@TheAESCorp) planned on building a ~180 MW coal-fired power plant in Connecticut.

The #coal plant would produce ~14 million tons of CO2 emissions over its lifetime.

Global warming was already making some waves & AES was concerned

👇 (2/9)
AES' CEO was former missionary & @HarvardAlumni - Roger Sant @santroger

Rogers’ "least-cost energy" strategy was revolutionary at the time.

@TheAESCorp's focus was minimizing the cost AND #environmental impact of #energy services.

So they needed a “green” solution

As @POTUS signs the Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act (aka Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal), a quick thread on what it *might* mean for Texas. There could be a lot more funding coming from the #BuildBackBetter package but here’s a look at what’s already passed
#txenergy #txlege
For each section, I have applied 9% of national funding to Texas. BUT, and this should be a question asked of all candidates in 2022, some of these funds are distributed through grants, not formulas.

If Texas doesn’t apply, our tax $ go to other states.
#txlege #txenergy 2/
One part I’ll be watching closely is the $5b in grid resilience funds, $1b per year, half to utilities, half to states. That’s $45m per year for 5 years for Texas to improve grid resilience *if* Texas policymakers pursue it. And another $45m/yr for Tx utilities. #txlege

Carbon capture and sequestration (or CCS) is being touted by some as a potential solution for #decarbonization in industries like cement and steelmaking. But how promising of a solution is it? A deep dive 🧵
There is only limited experience with CCS at industrial facilities beyond gas processing. Only one steel mill in the entire world (and no cement plants), capture CO2. Little info is available about how much they capture, and key info about cost and reliability is missing. Image
Only 3 of 26 CCS projects currently operating in the world have reported any information that would allow their “capture rates” to be determined. Without this information, it’s impossible to show that any existing CCS projects are economically, financially or technically viable.

Good that #SaudiArabia & #UAE have pledged #NetZero but #GCC total domestic emissions are only 2.4% of world’s. The #EU needs to focus on the emissions they export, mostly to #China, I argue how: 2/

Today @POTUS unveiled the #AmericanJobsPlan that includes transformative investments in clean energy that could kickstart the economy, create millions of good jobs and tackle the #climatecrisis head on. Here are a few key measures in the proposal [THREAD]
Electric Vehicles: $174 billion to compete in the global #EV market and support American workers to make batteries and EVs, electrify federal fleet, replace 50,000 diesel transit vehicles & work w/ state/local governments to build national network of 500,000 EV chargers by 2030.
Electric School Buses: Electrify at least 20% of US school bus fleet through new Clean Buses for Kids Program at @EPA and set the country on a path to 100% clean buses. Our analysis shows electric buses can have major health, cost-savings & jobs benefits.…

📢 Curious about #carbonremoval?
Read my new report @GlobalCCS: "Carbon Removal with #CCS technologies".

@EUCarbonCapture @Bellona_EU
@cleanaircatf @NEP_Brussels

#carboncapture is a unique set of tech because it has a dual role in addressing #climatechange. It can help to reduce emissions from point sources, AND it can remove CO2 from the atmosphere.

Let that sink in.
There are not many solutions out there that do both.

All #carbonremoval approaches (natural or technological) have their advantages and challenges/limitations, my overview looks into #BECCS and #DACCS.

Carbon capture: is it worth pursuing?

Get the basics in this thread 👇

#cleanenergy #carbonneutral #carbonfootprint #carboncapture #CO2

The global energy demand is growing and so are the associated emissions.

In order to meet goals of Paris agreement, cutting greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) are needed.

Current CO2 concentration in atmosphere: 410 ppm
Target to meet 1.5 deg rise: 350 ppm
2/Carbon Capture
Adopting low carbon and renewable sources of energy along cannot help reach target emissions .

Carbon (CO2) capture at-scale is a bridge as the energy mix shifts.

* CO2 can removed from flue / burnt gases
* Pulling from ambient air, direct air capture

I’m trying to lose weight, which is kind of like trying to address #climatechange. I made a bunch of pledges to myself at my very own COP35 before Christmas 2019. But how can I do it, and will I succeed? 1/11
A diet is about finding the right balance between energy demand and supply. I can reduce my consumption, switch to healthier fuels (less ‘fossil’ varieties, more ‘greens’). I can also exercise, making everything more #energyefficient. Setting targets is also important. 2/11
But by golly, it’s hard to fit all this in when I also have to maintain a job, an apartment, pay bills, keep relationships… there’s more to life than fretting about the climate (um, I mean, my health). 3/11

Have a look at how Big Tech (Google, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon, Uber and many others) lobbies Congress.
1⃣They loved the #Republican “tax reform” scam. See 2017 “victories.” Oy.⬇️
2⃣Their #climate priority is “advanced energy solutions.” I’m working on this, passing #carboncapture and nuclear innovation bills, but nobody thinks that’s close to enough. Go big, this ain’t.

The UK could be #CarbonNeutral by 2050, meeting its #ParisAgreement targets, according to a new report from The Royal Society and @RAEngNews. Here are 8 technologies and approaches that could be vital (a thread)…
Forestation – whether it’s replacing lost trees or creating new forests, this technique means more trees. Better management could remove as much as 12 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide per year.
Habitat restoration – 80% of the UK’s wetlands, peatlands & coastal habitats are considered to be in poor condition. Restoring these could prevent previously trapped carbon from escaping, & store up to 18 tonnes of carbon dioxide per hectare per year…
