*Thread* Our technical report shows how a Net Zero target can be delivered across the economy through a range of costed scenarios. (1/15) #NetZeroUK theccc.org.uk/publication/ne…
Power sector emissions can be reduced to almost zero through the deployment of #renewables and firm low-carbon power - such as nuclear and CCS - whilst providing twice the amount of electricity as today. Gas will continue to play a role, but will need to be decarbonised. (2/15)
The UK has vast renewable resources. Deploying renewables is the lowest cost way to reduce power sector emissions. This means that, in aggregate, a low-carbon power system costs around the same as a high carbon alternative. (3/15)
#Hydrogen plays an important role in industry, shipping (as ammonia), peak buildings heat and heavy good vehicles. It can also enable decarbonisation of power generation and agricultural vehicles. (4/15)
We can decarbonise buildings through combinations of electrification, hydrogen and hybrid systems. We draw on new research on heritage buildings and space-constrained homes which gives ~4MtCO2e left in 2050 in our Net Zero scenario. (5/15)
Decarbonising buildings is achievable but costly at ~£15bn/yr in 2050. HMT must assess how to allocate these costs across society. Important co-benefits for fuel poverty; improving comfort, health & wellbeing & unlocking significant industrial opportunities from low-C buildings.
With urgent action, the UK can reduce industry emissions from 105MtCO2e today to 5-10MtCO2e by 2050, at a cost of £120/tCO2e (£8bn/yr in 2050). Delay will mean less decarbonisation or greater scrapping of assets, as most industrial assets installed in 2025 will last until 2050.
Govt must urgently establish a funding mechanism to support industrial use of hydrogen, electrification and CCS (inc BECCS), a mechanism to support CCS infrastructure, and further support for improving industrial energy and resource efficiency and reducing methane leakage. (8/15)
Cars, vans and HGVs must switch to zero emission options inc. electricity and hydrogen. An earlier phase-out for petrol & diesel cars and vans of 2035 at the latest would not only lead to lower GHG emissions and improve air quality but also be financially beneficial to the UK.
Decarbonising road transport requires investment of £9bn in chargers for cars & vans and £3bn-£16bn for hydrogen refuelling stations, electric catenaries or extremely fast chargers for HGVs by 2050. Even with these costs, it's still likely to save drivers money compared to diesel
Big gains for households and business by reducing waste – currently £20bn of food is wasted each year and £150m worth of clothing is sent to landfill. More of this must be re-used, repaired or re-cycled to deliver resource savings and achieve climate goals. (11/15)
Many people are already separating and re-cycling their waste but all local authorities need to make it easy for all households and businesses to re-cycle and for everyone to recognise the importance of doing so. (12/15)
The adoption of low-carbon farming practices on soils and livestock can reduce non-CO2 emissions by 28% by 2050, but policies to deliver this must move beyond the existing voluntary approach. (13/15)
What you eat matters - adopting a healthier diet that entails less beef, lamb and dairy is crucial for cutting emissions. (14/15)
Planting more trees and restoring degraded peatland can deliver multiple benefits: reduced emissions, enhanced biodiversity, improved water quality, flood regulation and increased recreation and tourism (15/15)
