Thread (and column by @yayitsrob) via @leahstokes — a skeptical take on @JayInslee’s climate plan, or the first component of it anyway. Points well taken, mostly. I don’t dock Inslee any for proposing ideas open to question.
.@JayInslee is running on treating climate change as an emergency. The first iteration of his plan does that. It has kludgey elements, frankly, that would be the long way around the bush even if implemented perfectly. The direct way? A carbon tax.
A carbon tax would also be the smaller-government path: raise the price of emissions, then let people & businesses figure out how to cut their costs by cutting emissions. But a direct, visible tax would be unpopular, compared to standards & subsidies and other kludges.
It’s damned hard to get the carbon emission reductions we need without explicitly raising the price of emissions. @JayInslee & others should address whether we’re really treating #ClimateChange as an emergency if we can’t find a way to do that.
