If you want to turn a HERO into a VILLAIN — it's easy. Make him a CONSEQUENTIALIST. Once you buy into a "greater good" narrative, you can justify ANYTHING.

Spoiler: Captain America doesn't.
Compare and Contrast.

N.B. Doctor Strange is LYING.
She Hulk is on point here.

"Greater Goodism" is an evil doctrine. Only God would be capable of knowing "the greater good," much less bringing it about.
Interestingly, it among INTELLECTUALS (so-called) that "Greater Goodism" is most apt to take root. Hence the reason so many academics like the idea of social engineering.

Ordinary people usually have better moral sense. This comes out in pop culture again and again.
(Yes, I realize that J. K. Rowling and the writers of Doctor Who *now* support Greater Goodism).

It's an insidious doctrine, that affects those with power and influence.

Lord Acton noted that "power corrupts." Often, the WAY it corrupts is through gradual Greater Goodism.
