I watched Washington Week earlier this evening and what struck me most was the complete absence of any moral component in the conversation about the Supreme Court nomination. It reminded me of a bunch of high school students dissecting frogs in a Biology lab; no emotion,
no feeling. Am I among the last of a dying breed--we who believe that right and wrong do exist in this world, we who know that we sometimes do wrong things and we feel some guilt about it, we who sometimes help others out just because it's the right thing to do,we who believe
that we are our brothers' and sisters' keepers, we who can sometimes make personal sacrifices for the sake of the greater good? Are we becoming an amoral society?
The America I grew up in was a very imperfect place, but it was GOING IN
THE RIGHT DIRECTION. We were the great experiment in government "...of the people, by the people and for the people...". We were viewed with admiration and respect by the rest of the world. Somewhere in the last fifty years--I'm not exactly sure where, but somewhere--we lost our
way, we reversed our direction and we've been going downhill ever since.
As some of you know, I began walking on January 25th because I saw some people who were being gravely wronged, I got really mad about it and this time, unlike times in the past, I converted my anger into
action. I made a decision based on my moral values. It is difficult, it is stressful, it is painful, it is humbling--and it is right; it is the best thing that I have ever done in my life!
The mistreatment of immigrants is what pushed me across the line, but I am angry about a lot of other things! I am angry about the failure to enact gun control measures! I am angry about the treatment of women! I am angry about the treatment of blacks! I am angry about the
trampling of unions! I am angry about climate change denial! I am angry about the growing economic divide! I am angry about the disappearance of anti-trust regulation! I am angry about the failure to provide affordable health care! How can these issues be adequately addressed if
morality is not part of the equation? I am deeply concerned about the future of my country; I am not an optimist but I will keep on walking and keep on battling. It is all I can do.
