Sat through a couple of hours of Mark Warner today. Some thoughts to follow 1/
Mark Warner won’t comment directly on the Don Jr subpoena but says the committee always reserves the right to call people back.
Mark Warner wants to know what Mueller found on the counterintelligence side before wrapping up the committee’s Russia report. (Burr a few days ago told me he has no questions for Mueller.)
Warner says August is an ok goal for finishing the report but he’s not committing to that. I’m reminded Burr wanted to finish last August, and even earlier.
Mark Warner took a lot of shots at Trump for not warning Putin in their latest call, not taking more steps to protect against another attack, pushing back on Mueller testifying, etc.
Mark Warner says the Russians will be back in 2020 because “it worked” in 2016 and interference is so cheap.
Warner’s other big worry is China. Calls Huawei equipment “extraordinarily dangerous” especially with 5G because of ability to update systems with undetectable malware in the future under command of the Communist government.
Warner says Huawei equipment can already route calls through China, where they have the potential for the government to scrape the data.
Warner sees this as a “Sputnik moment” where USA is at risk of losing technological lead and China could come to dominate 5G, AI, quantum computing, biotech, etc.
Warner says China is also “weaponizing” its large number of students at USA universities, threatening some families unless the students return home with intellectual property.
