Why it is nonsense to suggest the EU is a “dictatorship“. It is not because:

1. We have vetoes and opt outs

2. EU commission drafts, enforces and monitors EU laws. But it does not pass laws. It’s a civil service answerable to EU governments.

And 👇
3. The EU trade commissioner negotiates on a mandate drawn up by EU member states.

4. The commission cannot foist laws upon EU member states.

5. EU laws are agreed by: a)the council of ministers, comprising ministers from 28 EU and b) governments and the European parliament.&
6. sensitive policies, including tax, defence and foreign policy, have to be agreed by unanimity.

7. LSE research found that The UK is on the winning side 87% of the time.

&
8. MEPs have more power to shape EU law than their Westminster colleagues with many amendments. Over in the UK Parliament legislation is rubberstamped as a rule.

9. EU compares well with massive UK delegated legislation I.e. statutory instruments which are not even debated.
10. The European parliament also has the power to dismiss the commission and approves the appointment of the politicians who lead it.

11. If 1/3rd of national parliaments oppose a draft law, the commission must review it &
12. more than 1/2 of national parliaments oppose a law, this could force a vote in the European parliament or council.

13. Is the EU perfect? No. But is it a dictatorship? Demonstrably not and people should not swallow Brexiter lies on this.
