At PMQs Corbyn claimed we are "seeing the rich get richer while the poor get poorer".

It's literally the other way round - income growth since 2010 has been strongest for poorer households because of record employment + Living Wage + tax cuts. Only fall was in top 10%. (1/)
The whole implication of Corbyn's attack was that inequality has increased. But actually it is down compared to the last Labour government, however you measure it (2/)
I welcome the IFS work on inequality, but there is currently no sign that UK levels of inequality are converging on the US. On World Bank data it looks like they are diverging (3/)
Looking at OECD data which goes back further, looks like UK & US levels of inequality actually further apart than in 2000. Fair to warn we should avoid US levels of inequality in future, but not happening so far. (4/4)

A simple chart for today from my laboratory.

For those unversed in logarithms, a logarithmic scale makes it much easier to plot HUGE changes in values compactly.

What if I had the numbers I wanted to plot: 1, 3, 5, 5, 7, 9, and "1 billion"?
I would just plot the base-10 logarithm of those numbers instead, which would yield a simple scale from 0 to 9 instead an awkward one from 1 to "1 billion".

The same deal with the plot above. Both the x and y axes are base-10 logarithmically scaled.
To help you out a bit further with the x-axis:

The number of employees goes from 1,000 to 10,000,000.

The biggest employer on the chart is all the way to the right horizontally. It's Wal-Mart (WMT), with 2.2 million employees.

Here goes. I’m so excited about this I had to articulate it somewhere. Be aware, however, that this is probably going to be the least articulate and coherent thread you’ve ever read, but I wanted to share a summary. So, THREAD:
1) Knowledge-rich, knowledge-led, knowledge-engaged, knowledge-smothered - whatever your poison may be, knowledge is GOOD. The “Matthew effect” = the (knowledge) rich get richer and the poor get poorer
2) “Reading tests are knowledge tests in disguise” - @DTWillingham so it’s VITAL our children are exposed to broad knowledge through our curriculum

2. the phrase the rich get richer while the poor gets poorer, in Nigeria it doesn't always mean the rich who work hard for their money but the rich who are strategically positioned to amass wealth through corruption.
3. When billions are spent on power & we still ask 'where is the power', when monies allocated for defense are diverted to private accounts & today we have 'dasukigate', when billions of $ generated from NNPC go into private accounts, when contractors are paid almost in full

On Capitalism - a thread

While I see the merits in our form of economics, I am also critical of it for ethical reasons. Being critical at all is immediately offensive to some, but permit me a moment to explain why I perceive it that way 1/
We live in a world that consists of three commodities: apples, oranges, and bananas. All involve a simplified production process of planting seeds, watering them, and then harvesting the crop. This society needs no other goods. 2/
Initially, all three require the same amount of work per unit to produce, and society allocates an equal amount of land to each good. That is, one apple = one orange = one banana. 3/

One of the problems of most Nigerian youth is lack of sense of purpose. Most of us have spent years trying to discover why we are here.

We don't even have a system or backgrounds that help us discover ourselves.

Most study just anything at the university just to have a degree.
Most parents just want to have children without adequate plans on how to train this child to not just develop into a well rounded human but to discover their purpose in life.

Most Nigerian youths purpose in life is to work hard to provide for their parents, siblings and kindred.
These youths neglect themselves and become almost like a savior born to suffer and die for their families. If anyone is a first son or daughter, the pressure intensifies.

This has led many to jettison their dreams for their siblings to achieve theirs. Some even for their parents

@broadbent @HC_Richardson The unspoken, hidden truth about capitalism is that in its global/large mechanisms it becomes a ponzi scheme, where the wealth starts flowing toward the top of the pyramid. Its not as easy see to see in local examples, though it is there. It is why Capitalsim needs a container.
@broadbent @HC_Richardson 1/ One reason why in local examples capitalism works, like the relationship between the trades, say of farmer, mill, baker, mechanic, banker and etc... the functions of a working/thriving local economy, is due to a) the value tends to stay in the community. Ie,
@broadbent @HC_Richardson 2/ That is, the money paid to one business for services or goods (especially goods made within the community) tends to stay in the community. Whereas in a national, or even global versions of Capitalism the money is instantly siphoned out of the community in a one-way flow.
