Yesterday I was at my son’s school for the Competence Based Curriculum induction because he’s in grade 3 & apparently, he will be sitting for national exams at the end of the year. My conclusion: CBC will work out for parents who have time & money.

A THREAD

@wmnjoya @Eewangari
The facilitator started by mentioning that parents were the KEY determinants of the success of the CBC because they have a greater role to play. In short, almost 60% of CBC will require parental involvement with teachers assuming a supervisory role.
According to the facilitator, the difference between 8-4-4 and CBC is that 8-4-4 is knowledge based and exam oriented whereas CBC focuses on knowledge, skills, value & attitude and it entails an everyday assessment.
The 7 key competencies to be taught under CBC are:
1. Communication and Collaboration
2. Critical thinking and problem solving
3. Creativity and imagination
4. Citizenship
5. Digital literacy
6. Self efficacy
7. Learning to learn
And by the way, there are also new terminologies that have been introduced:
1. Pupil/Student = Learner
2. Teacher = Facilitator
3. Exams = Assessment

So back to the grade 3 national exams which are referred to as Kenya Early Year Assessment. (KEYA). KEYA will be assess the acquisition of the 7 competencies that I have listed above and it will entail:
1. Assessment of portfolio
2. Written exams

#CompetenceBasedCurriculum
1. Assessment of portfolio (compilation of work by the learner under guidance of parents). The portfolio should show evidence of progress & mastery. Majority of this work is downloaded from the internet and printed. This contributes to close to 60% of the overall assessment.
Not sure how parents with no internet access and printers will be able to handle this. What about parents who can't afford cyber cafes? Does it mean their children will fail this particular assessment?

2. Written Exams - which will focus on English, Mathematics and Integrated learning areas. We were also told, these exams will be much shorter compared to what 8-4-4 offers.

#CurriculumBasedCompetence
.@ExamsCouncil will provide a theme for portfolio assessment, which they will email to schools. This will be downloaded and sent to parents who will in turn help children/learners with the tasks. Thereafter, parents will comment & sign at the end of each task.
Materials needed for the assessment:
1. 4 passport photos in school uniform
2. One ream of printing papers
3. Luminous papers
4. Scrap book
5. Display book (60 pages)
6. Scissors
7. Masking tape
8. Crayons
9. Paint brushes

#CompetenceBasedCurriculum
CBC is also meant to impact values to the learners. (According to facilitator, 8-4-4 has not succeeded in this) Some of the values include:
1. Responsibility
2. Respect
3. Care & Compassion
4. Understanding
5. Tolerance
6. Honesty
7. Trustworthiness

Finally, parents have a number of roles under CBC. I managed to capture 12 of the over 18 that were in the slide. Check them out!
