Booker T. Washington was one of the last major black leaders born in slavery.

NOTE: This is the only known recording of Washington's voice.

I agree (have problems) with the speech. But, I understand why.

Unlike, some of his critics he had to negotiate with people who hated him. And, he was successful. He made them respect him - that's not easy. Reminded of my professor who used to say: "Be careful of presentism".
Imagine, being a slave and then a grear war shifted the legal relationship between slave and slave master.

But, those newly freed slaves no longer had government power to keep white racist from hurting them.

All these former slaves had was an Ambassador -- Mr. Washington.
So, all things considered, I think given how hostile the situation in The South was he was a master negotiator. And, today, his legacy lives in his students at @TuskegeeUniv .

There's some value (and warnings, too) to be learned from his story.
@ChrisALadd has brilliantly laid out what those warnings out! And, I think all of it (bad/good/between) are are transferable principles.
He wasn't perfect.
He had few roadmaps.
Ol' Booker T. had to create his own road, and he got somethings wrong, but, he did get that road built.
And, we're all benefactors driving on it, now -- opining about out it now.
