Well, this is a new kind of NAFTA story: The president is baselessly claiming that the speaker of the House has suffered a cognitive decline that has rendered her unable to understand the new NAFTA. thestar.com/content/thesta…
There is, clearly, not a lot of logic here, but it’s worth noting: Pelosi is not at all a strong opponent of Trump’s deal. She’s suggested she wants to get to a yes, has outlined some specific concerns she says Democrats need addressed, is engaging in talks with Lighthizer.
For Canada and others, the unknown is whether this personal anger will or won’t prevent the White House and House from working together to get the agreement passed. Trump’s officials often engage in normal and cordial negotiations with people the president is publicly blasting.
