And this is the tragic flaw of her abject failure in office: a correct recognition that compromise was necessary, but after having profoundly damaged the prospects for it by her own actions.
"Citizens of nowhere" insults a chunk of the population.

"Queue jumpers" insults EU27 citizens, and misrepresented the law.

A gormless Lord Chancellor fails to react to attacks on judicial independence.

Her own red lines painted her into a corner.
She did not shun the shrill zealot who wrote about the "enemies of the people". In fact, she hired him.

Her "no deal is better than a bad deal" gave the no deal advocates who opposed her their best line.

She sought to compromise with Corbyn after four years of demonizing him.
The crucial fork in the road was the GE17 election debacle. But rather than take the opportunity to reach out or rethink, she did the opposite: placing her government's survival in the hands of a party implacably opposed to the compromise she could reach with the EU.
Personally I felt sorry for her at the end of the speech, and wish her and her family well. But she was the wrong person at the wrong time: exacerbating, rather than solving, the crisis bequeathed to her.

She didn't start the fire; but she helped bellow it out of control. //
