Okay so on one hand, I believe in a multiplicity of tactics for, like, almost everything. On the other hand, sometimes I see a particular tactic gaining traction and get really ambivalent about whether it does more harm than good. I'm REALLY ambivalent about Handmaid protests.
Because have you READ the Handmaid's Tale? For me the most terrifying part of it isn't once the whole terrible apparatus of Gilead is in place. It's the beginning.
It's when Offred's boyfriend soothes her as her credit card stops working, as her rights are taken away, and kinda gets off on her increasing dependence on him.
Like, dressing up as Handmaids might be an effective protest if men A) actually even KNEW the Handmaid's Tale beyond ads for the show, and B) saw the society portrayed in it as a bad thing.
But, like, showing up to protest portraying oneself as a woman forced into a submissive role that involves compulsory pregnancy? Anyone who doesn't want that already knows that's what the GOP is going for.
And I think it's underestimating the portion of the country--male AND female--that's totally cool with that being our future.
It just seems like:
GOP: we want you to be submissive!
Protesters: we're submissive!
