Wind & solar (green) are a very small share of India's energy use & coal use continues rapid growth (as do CO₂ emissions).

It is a long, long way for renewables to displace coal in India... Why is India then hailed as a climate leader?

India is building huge amounts of renewables, but this does not reduce emissions unless it displaces coal power (which it doesn't). India further supports its coal industry. It will take decades of rapid renewables growth to meaningfully reduce coal use. 2/
Perhaps India is a climate leader for renewables deployment, but it is not a climate leader for reducing emissions. Likewise, Norway is a climate leader for EV deployment, not for reducing emissions. It seems climate leadership is not about reducing emissions?

2018 was a bonanza year for natural gas, increasing by over 5%, one of the strongest growth rates for over 30 years.

US drove the increase with a huge weather related spike in gas consumption.

Dale Spencer @BP_plc made the point that the US increase was weather related, something the @EIAgov tracks in STEO.

The spike in 2018 was more likely since 2018 was a 'normal' year (for heating), & 2016 & 2017 were 'milder' years. See this thread

The US & China led growth in gas use:

The growth in US was due to power (coal to gas) & heating (power & buildings).

The growth in China was due to coal to gas in industry & buildings, improving environmental outcomes. Very little Chinese growth in gas power generation!

Are Australian GHG emissions stable or skyrocketing?

It depends on how you plot it, & putting LULUCF at the bottom of the figure makes it look better than otherwise.

Putting the LULUCF emissions at the top, & changing colours, makes a huge difference. Excluding LULUCF, with all its complexities & tricks, reveals that Australian GHGs have grown a solid 32% since 1990, instead of down 11% with LULUCF.

GHG emissions from the energy sector have grown the most, but slowed recently. Emissions from transport continue onwards & upwards.

Better build that solar / wind & roll out those EVs. Oh, elected the wrong government...

I have finally updated to Version 2 of the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP) database. The data has a few updates, a few new variables, & now includes the 1.5°C scenarios.

Still need to tweak figures & code (of course)...

The updated database includes CCS in terms of CO₂, so I no longer need to estimate it from fuel consumption.

But, for some reason, GCAM has quite some CCS already...

Bioenergy with Carbon Capture & Storage (BECCS) where 10-15GtCO₂/yr is not unusual in mitigation scenarios, & it is used in nearly all mitigation scenarios.

Why? 🇨🇳 is moving to decarbonise & transition its economy as fast as it can. China is the world's biggest producer, consumer & importer of coal. But China's coal consumption peaked in 2014. 🇨🇳 will probably cease thermal coal imports medium term, relying on their domestic mines.
China just announced a 21GW subsidy free wind & #solar tender, for construction completion by next year. Grid parity for renewables in China by 2020. That is well ahead of target. Zero pollution, zero emissions domestic production. bloomberg.com/news/articles/… by Feifei Shen @business

India (Bhārat), aka Republic of India (Bhārat Gaṇarājya) constitutes a mosaic of paradoxes and contradictions starting with the existence of gigantic socio-economic disparities which are in sharp contrast with the spectacular technological development in most productive sectors.
Such contradictions reflect significant measurement discrepancies which, in India's case, could be on the order of hundreds of millions of people.
Furthermore, there is the problem of Islamic terrorists, who are trained abroad and find easy fuel in the contradictions within it.
Finally, there’s agriculture which, by some estimates, accounts for 90% of India’s water consumption. Farmers meet irrigation demands by indiscriminately extracting groundwater, which some say accounts for a quarter of the world’s groundwater usage.

On the other side, @JoshSHill wrote about TEPCO, Japan's biggest thermal power generation firm. They just announced a joint venture MoU with @Orsted for offshore #wind.

The Great Indian Bustard is endemic to India.

The amazing fact is that it was to become our national bird but it was denied the honour for the worry that its name might be misspelt! Bastard 😒😒

But this is not it. Infact the National bird title is the least of it. India has been pretty hostile to this majestic bird.
The bird has vanished from nearly 95% of its historical range.
Less than 150 remain today.
