Two things I didn’t know until I was yesterday years old:
1) Memorial Day was started by African Americans honoring fallen Union solders
2) The Statue of Liberty was gifted to America to celebrate freed slaves, not immigrants.
Erasure is real, you all. But that part we knew.
Tons of reading on Memorial Day (and it’s as contentious as you’d expect) but this piece by Yale history professor David Blight is great: nytimes.com/2011/05/30/opi…
As is this one about the Statue is Liberty that ran a few days ago in the Washington Post: washingtonpost.com/history/2019/0…
You can’t remember what you don’t know. Thank you to all who have fought and continue to fight for freedom, in all the many ways that war takes shape.
