Two things I didn’t know until I was yesterday years old:
1) Memorial Day was started by African Americans honoring fallen Union solders
2) The Statue of Liberty was gifted to America to celebrate freed slaves, not immigrants.
Erasure is real, you all. But that part we knew.

I had so many WOC writers come up to me in tears after this panel and I know there are so many more out there who cannot possibly afford or take time away for a conference like this, so I just want to recap a few things...
1) when we talk about race in publishing, we talk about today, and yesterday is always used to contextualize how much better it is today.
2) but what we don’t talk about is the actual toll of yesterday. I was writing for 20 years before my first novel was published. 20.

Memorial day is always a conflicting time for me now.

I was fortunate, very fortunate, in my deployment that we didn't have anyone killed. A few got injured, but nobody died.

Then in the eight years since we've been back a half dozen guys I served with took their own lives.
And I know that Memorial day is supposed to be about honoring those who died in war, and also recognize that not every veteran who takes their own life does so bc of factors directly related to service.

Veterans can take their own life for the same reasons civilians do.
But it's still a difficult thing to reckon with. And it's hard to separate whatever factors went into their final decision with what they went through - what we all went through - and wonder what is it that makes you carry on and not end up like them.

And there's no answer.

Memorial Day was started by former slaves on May, 1, 1865 in Charleston, SC to honor 257 dead Union Soldiers who had been buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp. #MemorialDay
They dug up the bodies and worked for 2 weeks to give them a proper burial as gratitude for fighting for their freedom. They then held a parade of 10,000 people led by 2,800 Black children where they marched, sang and celebrated.

KNOW YOUR HISTORY: Memorial Day was started by formerly enslaved Black Americans on May 1, 1865 in Charleston, SC to honor 257 dead Union Soldiers who had been buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp. They worked for 2 weeks to give them a proper burial.
The bodies were placed in individual graves, a 100-yd. fence was built around them, and an archway was erected over the entrance bearing the words "Martyrs of the Race Course." A parade of 10,000 people led by 2,800 Black children with arms full of roses, sang and celebrated.
Gathering in the graveyard, the crowd watched five Black preachers recite scripture and a children's choir sing spirituals. It took three more years for the holiday to be officially proclaimed by General John A. Logan. (Sources: Time, PBS & NYTimes)

Buried in Tiberias @Israel, upon final request to be buried in the ancient homeland

So far we learned about some pogroms 😠(1171 France, 1190 England) and Maïmōnídēs dying 😢(1204 Egypt).
JewishHistory is filled with sorrow and darkness but it gets better in the 2nd half of the 20th century 😉
