1. Before I wrote my book I used to think that the idea of the school I will like to attend was unattainable. I knew what I wanted the school to look like but wondered if Nigeria’s educational system will ever step up to that level #PreachAChild
2. Today, I will like us to open our minds to what d school system can actually become. It is easy to say we should remain at status quo but whether we change or not our world is changing&we have to move with it by preparing students with the skills they need to win #PreachAChild
3. Imagine a school system that recognizes learning is natural, that a love for learning is normal and real learning is passionate learning – @tom_peters
#PreachAChild
4. A school curriculum that values questions above answers, creativity above fact regurgitation individuality above conformity and excellence above standardized performance - @tom_peters
#PreachAChild
5. Imagine a school system where students are allowed to give feedback to their teachers on how well they are conveying information. Let’s face it, some teachers do not know how to pass knowledge to the students in a way that it makes sense #PreachAChild
6. Imagine a school system where all students wake up in the morning excited to go to school just the way they are excited about playing because they know that school appreciates their uniqueness and makes space to accommodate their differences #PreachAChild
7. Imagine a school system that prepares students for the real world by connecting what they learn to practical realities. E.g Show us how Pythagoras theorem works in the real world. #PreachAChild
8. Imagine a school system where students are not afraid to be assessed (exam, tests) because they know that the assessment will be done in a judgment-free environment to celebrate their strengths (academic and non-academic) and show them how to improve #PreachAChild
9. Imagine a world, where parents recognize that their children are all different and celebrate each one according to their strengths. A child that doesn’t think in numbers but is a wordsmith should be celebrated the same way with the one who is the math genius. #PreachAChild
10. Imagine a school system that exposes children early to different professions and experiences so that they have a wide range of options to choose from while deciding on a career instead of boxing them to being doctors and lawyers. #PreachAChild
11. Imagine a school system that recognizes that it is okay for a child to be multifaceted e.g good in sports, academics & entertainment at the same time & supports the child to explore their passions that may lead them into multiple disciplines or one career path #PreachAChild
12. Imagine a school system that asks a child, “why did you choose to be a doctor?” & doesn’t stop at the vague answer the child gives but goes further to ensure the child understands what doctors do & picked that career path based on knowledge about the profession #PreachAChild
13. Imagine a school system that doesn’t judge students for performing poorly but goes further to understand what their challenge is. That student may be struggling with a learning disability that even the parents are not aware of #PreachAChild
14. Imagine a school system that understands that students learn at different pace and process information differently and checks to ensure that what is being taught makes sense to the student #PreachAChild
15. Imagine a school system that rewards teachers for being creative with their teaching methods, for being empathetic and helping the slower children catch on. #PreachAChild
16. Imagine a school system that attracts teachers who are passionate about teaching and rewards them with good employment benefits. #PreachAChild
17. Before you say this is not possible, there are schools we can draw inspiration from who are already redefining what school as we know it should be. Schools like @ronclarkacademy , Lumiar Schools, @hightechhigh #PreachAChild
18. Honorary mention to @khanacademy who have built a safe place for students to run to when what their teacher is teaching them does not make sense #PreachAChild
19. I wrote The Chronic School Hater because I knew that it will take years before Nigeria’s educational system (especially public schools) reinvents itself and I wondered what a student who can’t afford to attend the fun schools will survive #PreachAChild
20. I wrote the book because I knew that it is possible to redefine learning for yourself as a student regardless of the teachers you have and what your school looks like. #PreachAChild
21. Start with reading my book and following our community on Instagram and Facebook. Assess yourself and understand how you process information and your optimal learning period and maximize it. #PreachAChild
22. If you are visual, google the visual representation of anything you are learning so that it can stick. If you are not a night person, stop attempting to read through the night, go to bed and read anytime before nighttime #PreachAChild
23. If you have a friend who can teach more than your teacher, spend more time with that friend until you understand. There is no hard subject, we just have teachers who don’t know how to make the subject make sense #PreachAChild
24. Finally, "You cannot wait forever for leadership to define what your life would be, because if they don’t get to do it on time, by the time they get to do it, time might have run out for you" – Ibukun Awosika
#PreachAChild
Who wants a free copy of my book? I have 5 books to give away in celebration of #ChildrensDay #chronicschoolhater
