The prime minister says the abolition of maintenance grants “has not worked” because it’s laden poorer students with even more debt and is regressive.

If they are restored and fees cut, students who went to university in the last four years or so will presumably not be compensated. Students who would have received the grant won’t. They will be the unluckiest cohort ever, with no justification save for their birth date. Madness.
The constant tinkering with HE funding (huge confusion for students/unis) and the creation of a system where much of the debt will never be repaid and inevitably written off by the Treasury in 20 years, will be considered one of the slow burn public policy debacles of the century
