💯. A jackhammer is ~130 dB. Suppressed gunfire is ~140 dB. Decibels are a logarithmic scale, so +10 dB is *twice as loud*. You can hear a jackhammer from blocks away, so good news, a silencer is twice as loud as that. Zero public safety danger.
Also good news: silencers add exactly zero utility for a criminal. Gun still audible from blocks away, and still pops up on ShotSpotter. But less concealable, more unwieldy, less disorienting to victims (attacker can bring ear pro, victims can’t), and one more point of failure.
The proof that they’re not useful for criminals: silencers have been *trivial* to manufacture at home for ages, and yet are ~never used in crimes. Like buy-an-oil-filter-at-Pepboys trivial. Concealability is key for criminals, as @Freakoutery explained at medium.com/handwaving-fre…
If criminals wanted silencers, they’d have them already. There’s nothing stopping them. The reason they don’t use them is because they’re not useful for crime. They’re only actually useful in lawful self-defense at home, in hunting, and in recreation. It’s the perfect accessory.
This is the kind of accessory gun control groups should favor. Increases safety for lawful shooters, useless to criminals. Why do they not like silencers? Will leave that as an exercise for the reader. 😉
