In years to come, historians will ask, what on Earth became of the Conservative Party. In 2015 hegemony was in their grasp. Yet they spent their moment of greatest strength, indulging their greatest weaknesses. This contest reeks of total decay. My piece. news.sky.com/story/in-the-t…
The nadir came yesterday- with Leadsom’s intervention suggesting parliament could legislate for the French, Germans etc and Javid saying Ireland was the tail wagging the Brexit dog. This is why the Tories can’t sort Brexit- they don’t understand what it is. Ireland is the dog.
And Matt Hancock, showered in praise for a plan which was more of the same.
Some say that the number of candidates in this race speaks of the strength of the Tory bench. In reality it a sign of the weakness of the front runners and the complete absence of any new credible thinking on where the party goes from here and what it does about Brexit.
In truth, to heavily bastardise Churchill, as I write in the piece: never in the field of political conflict has so much been said, by so many, to so little effect. We can only hope the contest markedly improves.
