Holy fuckola. I got ~4 pages through @lethain's new book before realizing "this might be the best book I have ever read on engineering teams" and by page 42 I knew for sure.

Every engineer should read this. Not just managers.

@Lethain I haven't gotten past the first section yet because I was borrowing someone else's book. But I have three copies arriving today at work, and we are going to book club it over lunch after we finish the SRE book.

Can't fucking wait.
@Lethain p.s. -- do get the hard copy, not the kindle version. it's printed on this glorious creamy thick paper with loads of whitespace and proper dotted formatting.

ultra luscious to hold in your hands and feel with your fingers, and lots of room in the margins for notes.

hey, all you kittens suffering from vicious FOMO.. i see you. 💔 here's the plan:

1. each discussion topic pod will have a note taker
2. end of night, all pods will present their takeaways to the whole room
3. when event is over, i will post all the topics + takeaways online
problem is, takeaways aren't the point of this event. people aren't showing up to passively receive wisdom from "experts".

we are all coming to actively puzzle through some highly unsolved industry problems with our peers, and share bits of information that are rarely pooled.
after all 💘you💘 need to be in the driver's seat of your own career, not some foggy expert.

so if it turns to be useful we'll look for ways to hold more of these in other cities, ways to help local leaders run successful skill shares. people like you. (ok?)

if they don't convince you to buy @honeycombio instead of rolling your own, then you are voluntarily opting to learn nothing from the last decade of mistakes in this industry.
@honeycombio i don't usually go balls out on statements as self-serving as that, but in this case it's just a fucking fact.
@honeycombio also: open source companies get away with giving self-serving marketing hoohaw disguised as "talks" that non open source companies would get CREAMED for,

and trusting AI to decide what to page you on still is, and forever will be, bullshit.

Pro Tip: when a vendor claims to handle high cardinality, don't rejoice before you ask:

* what do they mean by "handle"?
* can you break down by a hi-card dimension?
* can you break down by multiple? how many?
* do you have to index that field in advance?
* describe perf hit?
* what data types can be hi-card?
* what are the limits on those fields?
* what operations can you run on them?
* describe implications to your storage footprint,
* and costs
* what is the tested upper limit to cardinality?
* must you define schema up front?
* how wide can it be?
there are so many sneaky ways to lie with data, tests, and cute marketing slogans ("Infinite Cardinality!")

more like infinite marketing budget, lol

All 604 pages of the 1900 Huddersfield & District Postal Directory scanned and deskewed :-) I'm guesstimating a further 50 hours work (~5 mins per page) to get to the final PDF version. Time to stick the kettle on...
Just in case anyone's interested in the workflow...

Step 1) Scan the pages! I use a specialist book scanner (Plustek OpticBook 4600) which lets me lay the page completely flat and scans right up to the edge. Scans are done at 600 DPI. It took about 10 hours to scan the book.
Step 2) Crop the pages. Rather than do this manually, I use the batch processing tool in Paint Shop Pro. Takes about 15 minutes to processes the 600 pages.

1/ I finished @nntaleb's new #book Skin in the game, and here are my learnings, insights and notes.

Warning: this thread is going to be huge.
2/ Human systems are systems within systems, interacting in complex ways. No article / paper / logic can capture all interactions of such systems and their evolution over a non-trivial amount of time.

So fear one shot, large scale interventions (such as invasions, UBI, CRISPR)
3/ People with fuck you money should call out famous or powerful people when they are wrong

New #PA Congressional map is pretty much the best one Democrats could have hoped for. At least 2 pickups in neutral environment, likely ability to win 11 in current D+6 environment. Post coming
PA redraw creates map that is almost entirely drawn from scratch. Huge shifts from 2016 plan all over the place. Dems favored to win 9 seats there in almost any national environment.
(big swings mostly from renumbering, but aggregate differences are clear)
