Brain volume correlates with IQ or cognitive ability *within* each sex, but the diff in volume b/w the sexes does not show up as a diff in IQ, which implies some compensating difference in organisation

General principle of neural development: genetic programs specify an initial map of connections, but this is crucially refined by patterned electrical activity (first internally generated and later in response to experience)
Partly why you get cascading effects of mutations causing early connectivity differences - they necessarily also change the patterns of electrical activity that drive later refinement

We all have implicit assumptions and perspectives that we fail to question (or even recognise) - this is true for individuals and for whole disciplines. This is why exposure to thinking from other disciplines can be such a mind-opener

Here's the story of the discovery:

@connoremdin noticed that gene variants affect cirrhosis in same direction, similar effect size regardless of underlying etiology (fatty liver, alcohol, viral)
And so, idea: combine all causes of cirrhosis into a single new case definition and perform genetic analysis

Studies concluding there are “no brain differences” fail to take a multivariate approach. In this PNAS study, when “a simple multivariate analysis using the same data suggests the opposite: Brains are indeed typically male or typically female.” pnas.org/content/113/14…
Using a multivariate approach, this 2016 PNAS study found that they could accurately predict a brain’s sex 93-95% of the time. They conclude: “multivariate analyses of whole-brain patterns in brain morphometry can reliably discriminate sex.” pnas.org/content/113/14…

You probably heard of Toxoplasma because of the way it cycles between cats and their prey. However, Toxoplasma also infects people. 2/n
Toxoplasmosis can be dangerous in people with weakened immune systems, but in most people infections are asymptomatic, and aren’t even noticed. In fact, it is estimated that a third of the human population are chronically infected with Toxoplasma. 3/n

It's 2018, so at this point we all know the brain is just a big deep neural network with some behavior attached.
Problem: In order to form long lasting memories, neural networks take forever to train... many training examples. But brains can learn things v quicky... few training examples, and still remember a long time.
