BREAKING: After a 14-month investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, former Broward Sheriff’s Deputy Scot Peterson was arrested today on 7 counts of child neglect, 3 counts of culpable negligence and 1 count of perjury, per Broward State Attorney Mike Satz
2/ The charges relate to Peterson's "lack of response to the Feb. 14, 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School," per Satz.

"If convicted, the 11 charges technically carry a maximum potential punishment of 96 ½ years in state prison."
3/ "FDLE agents interviewed 184 witnesses, reviewed countless hours of video surveillance, and wrote 212 investigative reports, totaling more than 800 hours of investigation"

75 years ago today, one day before #DDay, Supreme Commander Dwight Eisenhower gave the final order for Operation Overlord to commence the next day.

“O.K., let’s go,” he said.

“The time was then 4:15 a.m., June 5,” Ike later wrote.
2/ Beyond considerations of weather, moon, tide and time of sunrise, Operation Overlord had detractors. Air Chief Marshal Sir Trafford Leigh-Mallory, a senior commander in the Royal Air Force, had thought the airborne operation would cause a “futile slaughter” of two divisions.
3/ “He believed that the combination of unsuitable landing grounds and anticipated resistance was to great a hazard to overcome,” Ike later recalled in CRUSADE IN EUROPE.

Ike went to his tent “and sat down to think.” He then “telephoned him that the attack would go as planned.”

On this day 75 years ago, 2 days before #DDay, after months of bloody battle in Italy, the Allies finally liberated Rome.

2/ Mussolini had been ousted the previous Fall and Gen. Pietro Badoglio had sought peace w the Allies. But the Germans were still there and they were dug in at the Winter Line (Gustav, Hitler, & Bernardt lines), stretching across the peninsula.

3/ Finally the Allies made it to Rome & recaptured it. The 5th Army “paid a high price for liberating the Eternal City," wrote GEN Mark Clark, its commander, noting the 5th Army casualties in Italy, including 11,292 American KIA, 5,017 UK, 3,904 French, and 176 Italian.

The #FloridaRecount2018 has led to protests, accusations of election fraud, and sheer confusion.

Here’s a thread on what’s happening.
2) In Florida, the law states all votes must be counted within 30 minutes of polls closing. It’s been nearly three days and the Broward Supervisor of Elections has yet to finish counting. They’ve also failed to provide the number of ballots still left to count.
3) So here’s the effect. Senator Elect Rick Scott has had his vote drop from 57k to 15k.

Candidate for Commissioner of Agriculture, Nikki Fried, lost on election night and is now leading by 3k votes.

There will be auto recounts in the Senate, Governor, and Commissioner races.

At the outset of the #Brexit process, most people assumed that a deal on #police and #judicial co-operation was easier to get than one on #trade. Time has shown this is not the case. Ongoing co-op on #JHA is one of the few items yet to be agreed on #withdrawal deal. Why?
Well, because the #EU and #UK's opening positions in the #negotiation are incompatible: Britain wants a #bespoke agreement with the EU, a la #Schengen, but is not willing to accept #ECJ or #EUCharter. EU wants to replicate existing models. What to do?

When Rick Scott became Governor in January of 2010, he began a campaign to privatize 30 South Florida prisons and hired Edwin Buss as the Secretary of the Florida Department of Corrections.
“It was one of the most aggressive private prison expansions in the history of the United states, maybe the most aggressive,” Edwin Buss said. While governor, Rick Scott has been through 5 Secretaries of the Florida Department of Corrections (FDOC).
Rick Scott also wanted to privatize the health care services of inmates. He hired Elizabeth Gondles to oversee it, but she had to resign over a conflict of interest: her husband was married to the head of the only organization that accredits prison medical services in the nation.
