Some reflections on a really enjoyable open research workshop yesterday at @lancasteruni @prosprPsych @methodsNW #OpenResearch #ORLancaster 1/n
First it was great to see many self-declared novices in attendance. But this also reminds me that we (educators, advocates etc) should not forget that we are in a massive open research bubble, especially in terms of our online interactions 2/n
Twitter is an amazing resource, but it barely scratches the surface of the people we need to reach. We have to do a lot more in terms of getting offline, providing with hands-on training,& practical, user-friendly tools, templates, workflows etc.

3/n
it’s clear that there are many barriers to entry and big gaps in certain areas where people will need practical support, including (but not limited to): understanding the purpose of pre-registration and how to actually do it

4/n
How to deal with ethics processes to ensure that your data can be shared to the maximal extent;

knowing what technical skills I should be acquiring to make my work more reproducible: do I prioritise learning R? Python? GitHub?

5/n
And thinking about what steps to take, it is so easy to become overwhelmed. There is a panoply of things that you COULD be doing - how do you choose which one? Getting started can be a huge issue!

6/n
Our unofficial theme yesterday was “every little helps”, and several speakers stressed the idea of not being put off because you can’t do everything at once; no one can. But we have to make it as easy as possible for people to engage

7/n
Every step you take toward open and reproducible science will go some way to future-proofing your own work and helping the research community at large. This is a collective endeavour (see @PsySciAcc ), and every contribution really does help

8/n
Shoutout to @westwoodsam1 for venturing “up north” in the name of science, and doing some top-notch tweeting to help me arrange my thoughts! We believe he made back to “The South” in one piece
