Their problem is that it accurately reflected the story.
The story is that a corrupt and gross family that would like to fashion itself royalty has embarrassed the United States by leveraging the office of the President and inserting themselves into an official state visit, and the Times is so cowed they told it from the family’s POV.
What’s damning is that in glimpses you can see the story they know they should be telling peeking out from between the words, like a splay of fingers poking up from a dungeon grate.
