Heeeeeeeeeeeeey happy people, do you know what today is?
That's right, it's GWENSDAY!
The penultimate issue of SPIDER-GWEN: GHOST-SPIDER (#9) hits a comic book store near YOU today!
With only one issue left in this run (#10, out next month), Gwen's got a lot to deal with in the aftermath of the attack that interrupted the Mary Jane's latest show and left at least one of her friends in critical condition.
We'll be picking up in August with Ghost-Spider #1--you haven't seen the last of this creative team, or our good Miss Stacy.
But the best way to show @Marvel that you like what we do and they're doing the right thing by keeping us together is to pick up this week's issue while it's still piping hot--and maybe grab a copy of our first trade, SPIDER-GWEN: GHOST-SPIDER, SPIDER-GEDDON! We'd appreciate it.
And remember, if you can only have one Spider-person in your life, vote Ghost-Spider! Gwen's a fighter, and she's going to go down swinging.

We talked last month about how it's impolite to tag authors directly in negative reviews. It was a whole thing. It went on for a while. But part of why it's impolite is not "it might hurt someone's feelings." It's because the social contract says authors can't respond.
Why can't we respond? Because if we're remotely successful at our jobs, our virtual "weight" is probably substantially greater than the reviewers. And targeting someone for the crime of not liking one of my books is unfair and unkind.

Okay, @UrsulaV we have a new dawn chorus member, it makes a long, drawn-out note followed by a series of trills, it's very loud and I hate it. Thoughts?
I have found a YouTube video of Seattle-area birdsongs. Elsie is climbing the walls.
We've done a pretty good job of creating backyard bird habitat. I recognize most of these.

I think someone is maliciously watering my tomatoes.
Seriously. We have two pots out front, and one is not thriving. Mom has been watering them the same, but the one that isn't thriving regularly has standing water in it. I think someone's been dumping things into the pot.
Checking the drainage has been suggested; Mom is now drilling holes in the pot.

I did something similar to this 5 years ago, in anticipation of EC & @theroots' Wise Up Ghost LP, on tumblr.

(You can still find all those posts if you look, although a lot of the YouTube links etc are now dead ends. It was 40 Days Of EC then, so for 2018 I'm upping it to 45.)
Mostly I will be going chronologically from the early years right up to the present, but it feels right to start out with Costello's 2002 song, "45."

With the upcoming Neil-Gaiman-orchestrated "Dreaming" line at DC comics, I thought it might be time to revisit Neil Gaiman's wonderful "Sandman."

It's funny, I was just thinking today about the late sixties paranoia about cultural psychosis and insanity.

Modern pop culture is similarly fixated on the idea of insanity rippling through the popular unconscious.

"Legion", "Westworld", etc.

It's almost surprising that it took as long as it did for Gaiman to write for "Doctor Who."

Gaiman's abstract/symbolic cosmos is very much in keeping with Russell T. Davies' approach to concepts like "the Time War."

I can’t stop thinking about The mad genius Steve Ditko, one of the greatest we’ve ever had. And a huge inspiration to me. The 1st comic book I bought was a Jack Kirby one, as I’ve recounted before. The 2nd was a Ditko one!
t was one of those fat 25-cent reprint books Marvel put out in 1970, Marvel Tales #28. Had one of those goofy Marie Severin covers, where the limbs didn’t quite make sense.
But inside was Ditko! Here's the splash page, from pencil to finish! I haven't seen too many Ditko pencils.
