The fact is, for most of my career I've made an average of around $35k a year with no paid days off, up to and including some of my network jobs. (CNN. the exception, paid lowish wages but offered four weeks' paid vacation and other perks when I worked there in the early 2000s.)
I've spent weeks sometimes gathering information for stories to pitch as a freelancer only to have editors at major publications steal my ideas and reassign them to staffers. You know who you are.
I've put off going to the doctor for months because I had no insurance. Once, I had a terrible kidney infection that just kept bubbling away in there because I was not allowed bathroom breaks when I was out on the field covering stories; they would want me on air every 15 minutes
I've put off eye care. Dental care. Infected cuts and scrapes have gone septic. I'm lucky that overall I'm extremely healthy or I'd probably be dead by now. Shit, I used to have to cover major wildfires without fire gear. UNIONIZE.
In order to stave off the inevitable question: I do this because I love it, because I'm good at it, and because I have some hope of changing the world for the better this way. Journalism is a crucial part of leading countries to healthy democracies. Why do you do what you do?
