I hope that @JeffreyGoldberg now realizes how this attitude perpetuates the very problem that he claims that he wants to solve. Yes, writing those stories is difficult. There are those of us who aren’t white men who are quite capable of handling the task. buff.ly/2EVl5qP
If he doesn’t get it, then everyone else should understand. Also, I’ve edited a 10,000-word story for a magazine, and he has least ten writers at that magazine who aren’t white men—folks I could name off the top of my head—to whom I’d assign such a feature without thinking twice.
This is what Goldberg went on to say. He seems to want to help, and that’s good. But he has some bad assumptions about the realities of the industry. A lot of cover stories aren’t written by white men. It isn’t as difficult to create pathways to change as he makes it seem here.
